Design Meets Government in Helsinki
02.09.2010
The sixth edition of the Helsinki Design Week runs from 26 August to 5 September. Design Den Haag was invited to give a key-note lecture on the subject 'design and government' within the programma of the European Cultural Foundation Network Finland. Ed Annink, intendant The Hague Design and Government, gave a speech about the mission and the goals of this initiative.
He also attended the Helsinki Design Lab Global 2010, a conference with the goal 'Government Meets Design': "Helsinki Design Lab helps government leaders see the 'architecture of problems.' We assist decision-makers to view challenges from a big-picture perspective, and provide guidance toward more complete solutions that consider all aspects of a problem. Our mission is to advance this way of working - we call it strategic design." 120 Government stakeholders and strategic designers from all over the world were invited for this three days event to talk about education, sustainability and ageing in three so called 'studios'. Speakers were amongst others Marco Steinberg (director Sitra, organization of the event), architect Alejandro Aravena and journalist Tyler Brûlé (founder of the magazines Wallpaper and Monocle).
